When I began this campaign, I did not realize the intense hatred generated by the Jeffco vs. Feds fight over inclusion rules for trans folk, the extent of problems generated by current rules that seem slanted in one direction, and the intense pressure for LGBTQ+ rights. We do need to find a reasonable way of protecting the non-trans while still ensuring that all (including trans and non-trans) can get a safe education.
I've been pressed for my position on LGBTQ+ issues. I've avoided discussing this as it distracts from academics, and I think I hold a moderate view.
1. All academic and trade programs must be open to all students regardless of race, sex, or sexual orientation. Yes, girls should be allowed in auto shop, and boys in cooking class, if they desire.
2. No person who has gone through any part of male puberty can participate in girl's sports because male puberty often gives advantages of strength, height, etc., and those having had male puberty in female sports is unfair to birth-female athletes. That person may participate in co-ed or male sports, or in other activities.
3. Performing "sex affirmation" surgeries, such as mastectomies or castrations, on kids is severe child abuse, particularly given the high DE-transition rate and irreversible nature of such surgeries. Modern medicine cannot regenerate fully-functional testes or breasts for reversal. These surgeries are best delayed to adulthood when people are better able to resist social pressure and less likely to change their minds. Justification as suicide prevention fails because suicide rates are high post-surgery.
4. As parents should be in control, no school may "socially transition" a kid without written direction from both the parents (submitted in person with photo ID to avoid faked signatures) AND the student. The student should be interviewed separately to verify he/she is not being pressured. This will protect parents from surprise transitions.
5. On school-sponsored trips, no person having testicles may be assigned to the same hotel room or bed as a student having ovaries. This will help prevent surprise pregnancies or sexual assaults.
6. All need bathrooms, because 8 to 3 is longer than most people's bladder capacity. BUT girl's bathrooms should be reserved for girls. Much as I think the funds should be spent elsewhere, given the numbers of trans students, each school should consider building at least one "gender neutral" bathroom equipped with toilets in stalls with floor to ceiling partitions that fully obstruct vision into the stalls. Overseas and on cruise ships bathroom stall partitions better obstruct vision than typical in US bathrooms. Then, boys can be evicted from girls bathrooms and still have a place to "go" as needed even if they are uncomfortable with their birth sex bathrooms, and other students may also use these “gender neutral” bathrooms when desiring enhanced privacy.
I believe that most of these policies could comply with Colorado non-discrimination law as they protect both groups.
